What a classic! I just watched this movie again. Its one thing to watch a movie that takes place in the 80’s (The Wedding Singer for example) and another to watch a movie filmed in the 80’s. Let’s be honest…Molly Ringwald is amazing! Really Sixteen Candles and the Breakfast Club were when she was in her prime. (It's too bad her career ends up taking her towards made for TV movies like, Molly: An American Girl on the Home Front). Her character, Samantha Baker is totally stuck in teen angst and there is something so refreshing about that. I love when she says things like “I could spit twice and die!” Everything is life or death. Its high school; it’s serious.
I forgot that John Cusack is one of the nerds in this movie. He is so young! I believe that this was only his second film. And I was also surprised that Joan Cusack is the nerdy girl with neck brace. She is really funny in this. I loved the scene of her at the party trying to dance. I also forgot that in the 80’s people (or at least Hollywood) used insults like “butt lick”. Apparently, the 80’s were also a time when Hollywood would cast 30+ year olds to play high school kids. So it’s a little disturbing to see these men doing pull-ups in the gym and talking about high school girls when the men look like they just trimmed their ear and nose hair. Seriously, I don't even know college kids that look that old.
My favorite quote from the movie is when Samantha is talking to her really dumb sister the day before her sister gets married. Her sister says this to Samantha, “I really love Rudy. He is totally enamored of me. I mean, I've had other men love me before, but not for six months in a row.” What a great line… then of course I love the fact that her sister chooses to take 4 muscle relaxers the day of her wedding to get rid of her cramps. She can’t even walk down the aisle without asking a guest to move over in the pew so she can rest. The best is when she is leaving the church and is trying to catch the rice with her mouth as people throw it at her. This made me laugh a lot. Similar to the brief scene when the paper boy falls off his bike in While You Were Sleeping.
OK, my last comment is about the love story between Samantha and Jake Ryan (who is Al Carver in Wild Hearts Can’t be Broken). First of all, he knows nothing about her. When he talks to his jock friend about her, this is their conversation:
Jake: I do independent study with her. I catch her lookin' at me a lot. It's kinda cool, the way she's always lookin' at me.
Jock friend: Maybe she's retarded
Jake: I'm being serious, ok. She looks at me like she's in love with me.
So, apparently staring like a weirdo doesn’t send the stalker signal, this is in fact how you get a man. Because at the end, they are sitting on a table with her birthday cake between them and Jake tells Samantha to make a wish and she says “but it’s already come true.” Then they kiss. Oh…Sixteen Candles….

The impact of gender and family role: my current research project
As part of my grad program (and my pending completion of it) I am required to perform some type of research project. Honestly, it's fairly small in size and the timeline is quite short. In fact, I will be presenting my research on April 22nd. That is really soon and just typing that date gave me a minor anxiety attack. Currently my research is far from completed and I just finished sending out the link to my survey. So, my survey is out...now it is time to research and write!
For this project I am doing a replication study. This exact survey instrument was used 11 years ago. So I am reusing it to survey a different generation of college students. I want to see what has changed in the past decade. I am trying to see how gender and family role impact undergraduate students' view of acceptable career choices.
When this study was done 11 years ago, family role and gender greatly influenced what students viewed as acceptable career choices. In that study, men and fathers were seen as much more suitable to fill most of the occupational roles than women and mothers. The only occupational category that women were seen as being more suitable for were the careers that fell into the "artistic" category. These are careers that include, "cake decorator", artist's model", "interior designer", etc. And even then, women were seen as more suitable for these careers than mothers were.
So, I want to see what has changed! I would assume (and maybe this is part of my hypothesis) that when I collect the results of this survey that gender and family role would have less of an impact on what students view as acceptable career choices. I would assume this because in the past decade, we have gotten a lot closer to achieving equality in the work place. Also, with the divorce rate being at 50%, I would assume that the parents of most college students are both active in the work force. Also, the "Millennial" generation is supposed to be full of students who are used to being busy, handling a lot, and achieving a lot. This generation, according to research, is optimistic about their future and the future of this country. I would assume that the Millennial students would have a "I can have/do it all" mentality. If this is the case, then being a woman, or a mother, or a father, would not influence their view of acceptable career choices to the degree that it did 11 years ago.
So, there it is! That is what I am going to be consumed with for the next 3-4 weeks! I'm really excited about this project and to see the results of the study. I'm also overwhelmed with the work ahead and I know that April 22nd will be here in a flash! I'll let you know if my hypothesis is correct or not...

Saturday confessions
I love Saturdays. I love Saturdays because students sleep in...which means it's quiet before noon. Saturdays are typically without agenda and therefore, I get to be lazy. This morning I thought I would tell you what my Saturdays regularly consist of. Just so you know, I'm taking a risk here. I am actually going to share some embarrassing information with you all. I usually try to hide some of these details. Anyway, here it goes:
8-9:30am (EST): Wake up without an alarm (I love waking up on my own...)
9:30-10am (EST): Brush my teeth, wash my face, drink one large glass of water and then make half a pot of coffee. On Saturdays I drink out of one of two mugs. Both of these mugs are larger than the ones I drink out of on weekday mornings. One is a Seattle Starbucks mug and the other is a mug with the text, "Today I am Bitter". Today, I chose the latter. Disclaimer -the mug I choose to use may or may not have a reflection on my mood.
10-11:30am (EST): With coffee in hand, I sit on my love seat covered in a blanket and watch 3 tv shows. (This is the embarrassing part) The shows are: That's So Raven, That's So Raven and Hannah Montana. Hannah Montana is my favorite and is sort of like the "grand finale" of my Saturday morning tv watching. Today, all 3 of the shows were ones I had seen before, which is becoming a frequent occurrence. But I still watch these repeat shows... and drink my coffee.
Sometimes between the 9:30-11:00am hours I make pancakes or oatmeal. It's like a mini-brunch all for me! Today though, I just had coffee. Then around 11:30am, I decide to take a shower and usually I am ready to come into contact with real people by 1:00pm. This afternoon I plan to take care of a few errands and I am looking forward to doing some much needed laundry.
Saturdays are my excuse to stay in my pajamas for half of the day, drink an extra amount of coffee, eat a large breakfast and watch kid shows. Saturdays are days that I get to take care of myself and do what I want to do (mostly). Saturdays are days that college students are less demanding of me and they are quiet! I love Saturdays...

Phone Interviews
I am currently in the process of looking for a new job. I've been working at Geneva College as a Residence Director for almost three years now. I will be finished with my masters degree in May and I am very confidant that it is time to move back to the west coast. I've been sending out a few resumes and doing some phone interviews. I don't really like phone interviews but seeing as how they are a necessity, I have tried to compose a list of both the good and the bad of phone interviewing. Here is my pro/con list that I sent my friend Kyle a few days ago:
Pros:
I can wear sweatpants
No one knows if my breath smells bad
I might get sweaty...but who cares?!
I can have a bunch of notes or "cheat sheets"
If a question is difficult, I can quickly use Wikipedia for help
If I need to buy more time I can just pretend that the phone connection is bad and ask for the question to be repeated
Cons:
I don't get any non-verbal feedback
Speaker phone is never that great
People might be bored to death with me and I can't tell
My jokes aren't as good
My hand motions are ineffective
No one is impressed with my fashion sense
I become way too wordy
And again, the lack of non-verbals
If you have any to add to the list...please do!

oh, how random....
Thanks to Lacey you are all going to learn 7 random facts about me (and they will be in random order). So here it is:
1. I love cemeteries. Especially the old ones. I love to read the headstones and to try to imagine what each person was like or what they did. There is something that feels almost romantic about being surrounded by so much history and so many unknown stories. Please don't think I'm creepy...
2. My musical talent is almost none. I took a few drum lessons before, but once I got to the part where I had to do something different with each hand, I quit. Drums are hard. Now, if I could play any instrument I would want to learn to play the fiddle...or beat box. Either would be sweet.
3. I don't cook mostly because I'm afraid of knives (I cut my finger almost off, trying to cook when I was 15). I also don't cook because I hate doing dishes and cooking requires a lot of dirtying of dishes.
4. When I go to bed at night I get really excited about the coffee I am going to make and then drink in the morning. Does this sound like an addiction?
5. I love podcasts. I typically listen to This American Life, Fresh Air, Selected Shorts, Discussions and I love finding things on iTunes U. Clearly, I am a life long learner...
6. My car's name is Mugatu. I drive a white Scion xB and I love it! I named him after Will Ferrell's character on Zoolander. In the movie, Mugatu is a fashion designer who invented the piano key necktie. He has crazy white hair and his sexual orientation is a mystery. Knowing all of that, I think you can understand why I named my car after him. It is one of my goals to make a mini-piano key necktie to hang from my rear view mirror.
7. I am convinced that if I met Andy Sandberg from SNL we would fall in love. Or Jemaine Clement from Flight of the Conchords. Which ever one I meet first.
